Royalty Free Music:

 

"Royalty free music" can be a confusing term but essentially it is music which is licensed for a single fee, without the need to pay any subsequent royalties.

This type of music is also known as "Stock Music", "Library Music" and "Buyout Music".

Music is used in so many applications today and each track must be licensed so that the artist can receive payment. Traditionally the music would have been charged for each usage, which can quickly become expensive and licensing can be complicated and time consuming.

Royalty free music companies offer an alternative to this process by offering music that can be purchased for a one time fee and then used as many times as needed.

For a time strapped, budget conscious producer, the obvious solution is to purchase music "off the shelf" and download the audio files immediately .

The composers derive income, not only from the initial purchase price but also, confusingly, from additional payments (or royalties!) if the music is broadcast.
These fees are paid from organisations such as PRS (UK) and ASCAP (US) and are collected from broadcaster licence fees and are not paid by the producer.
